Codependent No More

BCNM
!
Codependent No More - How to Stop Controlling Others and Start Caring For Yourself. - Melody Beattie
Relationships feature massively in the lives of both active and recovering alcoholics, addicts and codependents and rarely in a healthy way.  This wonderful book contains real-life examples, personal reflections; exercises and self-tests to assist in improving this area of life.
The book recalls the history of, "Codependent No More", and points the way for how to take care of yourself and what to do to start feeling better.
A review by someone who used the book to great effect is below:
“This book saved my sanity, my relationship, maybe even my life. I was going through major upsets in my relationship due to a partner's addiction. I was trying to "fix the world" one painful day at a time. When nothing happened except for me to lose hope, trust, faith and love, I turned to a friend for advice.  She recommended this book to me. Whenever I need to take a reality check and think of ME instead of that other person, I open the pages and let it heal me.”

Codepedent's Guide to the Twelve Steps

Codependent's Guide to the Twelve Steps: How to Find the Right Programme for You by Melody Beattie
In this book, Melody Beattie provides a detailed explanation of the Twelve-Step program designed by Alcoholics Anonymous, accompanied by advice on how to apply the program to codependent issues and cross-addiction.
The way these issues are dealt with in this book is incredibly helpful in allowing recovering people to realize how deep codependency can run. It offers education on how to lead an independent life and a balanced view of one’s part in any relationship.  Seeing that no control actually exists over anyone but themselves so powerfully changes attitudes it very often leads to a fuller and more rewarding life.

The Road Less Travelled: A New Psychology of Love, Traditional Values and Spiritual Growth - M. Scott Peck

Confronting and solving problems is a painful process which most of us attempt to avoid. Avoiding resolution results in greater pain and an inability to grow both mentally and spiritually. Drawing heavily on his own professional experience, Dr M. Scott Peck, a psychiatrist, suggests ways in which facing our difficulties - and suffering through the changes - can enable us to reach a higher level of self-understanding. He discusses the nature of loving relationships: how to distinguish dependency from love; how to become one's own person and how to be a more sensitive parent. This is a book that can show you how to embrace reality and yet achieve serenity and a richer existence. Hugely influential, it has now sold over ten million copies - and has changed many people's lives round the globe. It may change yours.

Women Who Love Too Much - Robin Norwood
If being in love means being in pain, this book was written for you. Therapist Robin Norwood describes loving too much as a pattern of thoughts and behaviour, which some women develop as a response to problems from childhood.
Many women find themselves repeatedly drawn into unhappy and destructive relationships with men. They then struggle to make these doomed relationships work. This bestselling book takes a hard look at how powerfully addictive these unhealthy relationships are – but also gives a very specific programme for recovery from the disease of loving too much.

Adult Children of Alcoholics

Adult Children of Alcoholics - Janet G Woititz

Describes the symptoms and treatment of alcoholism and examines the ways it can disrupt family relationships.
A review from someone’s experience:
“Anyone from a dysfunctional family should read this book. Categorized as an adult child of an alcoholic; the effect is just as devastating. For 38 years, life seemed so restless and tormenting. This book was an extreme help in spelling out the feelings that were felt but could not be put into words by an adult child who learned to shut out all emotions. A healing process begins as the tears begin to flow. This book is excellent!”.

Food Addiction: The Body Knows - Kay Sheppard

This powerful book argues that food addiction is similar to alcoholism and suggests individuals must abstain from addictive foods and provides a lifetime eating plan.
As a 63-year old woman who has lost and gained hundreds of pounds over the past 40 years, this book has shown me where the ultimate problem lies. This is the first time I have ever been on a diet where I felt so good and had no more cravings or even the desire to binge eat. I am slowly losing the 154 lbs that I need to lose - which I have never been able to do before without feeling deprived. This book is a miracle for me and I only wish more people would realize the help that is in there for those who have lots to lose. I cannot praise this book enough. Thank you for writing it - it has become my food bible and I will never again let food ruin my life as it has done in the past.

Boundaries: Where You End and I Begin - Anne Katherine

A revised and updated edition of the classic guide that explains how setting clear boundaries can bring order to a chaotic life, strengthen relationships and enhance both mental and physical health.

A recent review talked about the power shown in this easy to read book as:
"Boundaries gives firm and clear guidance as to what is and is not acceptable when dealing with other people, be they family, lovers, friends, bosses, co-workers, professionals, etc. Why is it inappropriate for your lawyer also to be your best friend? Why should you never accept counseling/therapy from one of your peers? We all have stories of relationships that have gone wrong without our understanding why - this book will help you avoid repeating mistakes that you (and they) didn't even realize had been made. If you want to understand how to respect other people and have them respect you, read this book - whatever gender you are."
