In 1973, a recovering alcoholic, Bill W (not the co-founder, a different Bill W) wanted to do something to fortify the will of the AA groups and recovering alcoholics he spoke to.

He designed the original coin with two large A's on one side and the Serenity Prayer on the other.  Although the design has been revised often since then and the range of available designs increased, his words to recovering alcoholics still holds true: "Carry this in your pocket or purse and when temptation is great, feel this medallion and remember your struggle to get this far"
